Shakti Shalini is a Delhi-based NGO founded in 1987 that works for gender equality. Shakti Shalini responds to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) through support services for survivors of violence and their children, working with marginalised communities to prevent violence, media outreach for gender equality, and a mentorship program. Basic Literacy Education is part of Shakti Shalini’s Skills Development for Combating Violence Project (Kushalta Vikas Kendra), which is part of the Prevention of SGBV Program.
Job Title: Basic Literacy Educator, Skills Development Centre for Combating Violence/ Kushalta Vikas Kendra (KVK), Shakti Shalini
Job Status: Full Time, Monday to Friday, (10:00am-6:00pm)
Job Location: Near Ashram Chowk, New Delhi – On-Site
Job Remuneration: Rs. 25,000 per month (Rs. 23,000 during six months’ probation period and Rs, 25,000 per month once confirmed after probation period)
Reporting:
The primary reporting person of the Basic Literacy Educator will be the Coordinator of the Kushalta Vikas Kendra (KVK), and the secondary reporting person will be Operations Lead, Shakti Shalini.
Basic Literacy at Shakti Shalini:
The role of the basic literacy educator at Shakti Shalini is to combine grassroots and intersectional feminist intervention with basic literacy education. The educator must be able to teach basic literacy in the subjects of English, Hindi, and Math. They must be able to work in a space that is constrained with resources (technology/ infrastructure/ privacy/ comfort). They must be able to teach basic literacy to any individual above the age of 16 years that are keen to learn. They must be able to conceptualise, plan, and implement different modules of basic literacy teaching for groups that are varying across age, competency, educational backgrounds, and levels of understanding, as well as know how to manage classroom dynamics and environments of such diversity. Throughout the basic literacy teaching, they must ensure that their modules, approach, methodology maintains an environment of gender equality, critical thinking, awareness and sensitisation building, and confidence and self-esteem raising. All their work must have a strong foundation of regular documentation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Basic Literacy Educator:
- Clearly understand the vision ofbasic literacyat KVK, Shakti Shalini, which is to combine education with feminist ethics and awareness, and thereby enrich and implement the same.
- Study, improve, and implement thebasic literacymodules and curriculum at KVK, Shakti Shalini for participants aged 16 and above belonging to the working class and lower middle class economic backgrounds, varying levels of education, understanding, and learning capacities.
- Upgrade the modules and curriculum of basicliteracyat KVK, Shakti Shalini to more gender sensitive content and conduct regular sensitization sessions across the basic literacy batches as per the internal structures and modules. Update the testing and marking schemes and learning material as required.
- Study and upgrade thebasic literacydocumentation systems and formats at Shakti Shalini in consultation with the Coordinator and implement the same.
- Enrol and admit the people who want to be part of thebasic literacybatches. 7. Hold basic literacy classes with the various batches and implement the vision, modules, and curriculum of the class and therein not only fulfill the requirement of basic literacy but also impart an understanding of gender equality, mutual support, and confidence building, as envisioned within the KVK project and aid in the organisation’s motto of zero tolerance to violence.
- Ensure that there is a balance between structure and flexibility so that outliers and students facing additional struggles are also contained within the classes.
- Ensure that all documentation for the batches is up to date in the formats provided.
- Periodically monitor and evaluate the progress of thebasic literacy educationamong the students. Document the progress quantitatively and qualitatively.
- Inspire, support and facilitate participants with care and sensitivity to not only enrol in basic literacy but also holistically plan with them for their overall growth and development, and identifying and responding to violence.
- Understand the backgrounds and overall challenges of each student to provide holistic intervention. For the same various activities would have to be performed such as identifying participant groups, formation of batches, students’ home visits, family conversations and interventions, parent-teacher meetings, community mobilisation, conflict resolution, regular planning, and follow-ups.
- Visit students’ homes and families in the communities and maintain telephonic coordination with the participants, to follow-up with them, understand their context, plan holistic support, and problem-solve with them.
- Maintain a non-judgmental, empathetic, understanding, respectful approach in all communication with all stakeholders (students, survivors, community residents, partners, etc.,).
- Handle all material, stationery, and equipment with immense care and responsibility.
- Report regularly and in detail to the KVK coordinator, and work closely with the Prevention Interventionist and Operations Lead.
- Work in careful synchronisation with the protocols, approaches, ethics and policies governing the space of Kushalta Vikas Kendra, the entire Prevention of Violence team, as well as the extended organisation.
- Participate in all pan-organisation activities/ meetings/ trainings/events.
Necessary skills:
- Basic Literacy teaching skills.
- Hindi reading, writing, and speaking.
- English reading, speaking, writing, and understanding.
- Very good teaching, classroom management, communication, inter-personal, facilitation and mobilisation skills.
- Able to carry out quantitative and qualitative documentation, collate data, and compile reports effectively for quick submissions.
- Committed to gender equality, addressing violence and abuse, psycho-social well-being, and intersectional grassroots activism, as a life purpose.
- Creative, sensitive, non-judgmental, hardworking, team-worker, independent.
- Self-reflective and open to feedback
- Capable of maintaining composure in situations of stress and crisis.
Eligibility:
Academic: The candidate must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in any discipline. An additional qualification of a B.Ed. would be preferred but not compulsory.
Work experience: Must have a minimum of two years of full-time work experience in a background of teaching/ primary education/ basic literacy. It is preferred if work experience is in a grassroots environment with students from marginalised backgrounds and limited resources, but this is not compulsory.
