Shakti Shalini is a Delhi-based NGO founded in 1987 that works for gender equality. Shakti Shalini responds to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) through support services for survivors of violence and their children, working with marginalised communities to prevent violence, media outreach for gender equality, and a mentorship program.

Job Remuneration: Rs. 37,000 / month (Rs. 35,000 during first six months of probation period and Rs. 37,000 post probation period)

Reports to the Child Protection Lead, Shakti Shalini.

About Shakti Shalini’s Child Protection Unit (CPU)
The Child Protection Unit (CPU) at Shakti Shalini supports children and adolescents of survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), recognising that they are survivors themselves, either directly or as witnesses. Growing up in environments of SGBV can normalise violence, increasing the risk of its continuation across generations, whether as survivors, perpetrators, or both. CPU works intentionally to interrupt these cycles by engaging with children, adolescents, and their caregiving units through a holistic, trauma-informed, and restorative approach. It addresses emotional, psychological, and social impacts while strengthening supportive environments. The unit provides comprehensive psycho-social support, including counselling, access to physical and mental healthcare, educational and vocational aid, and play-based interventions. Where needed, it also facilitates child protection services to ensure safety and well-being.
Job Description:
The Child Counselor is expected to understand the vision and mission of the organisation and CPU. They would be required to provide psycho-social counselling which would include facilitating healthcare, education, play, parenting-based intervention to ensure the well-being of the child, and rehabilitation. They must also document their work thoroughly. Most importantly, they must support each child with care, compassion, nurture, and sensitivity.
Responsibilities of the Helpline Social Worker:
- Understand the vision and mission of the Shakti Shalini.
- Understand the vision and mission of the Child Protection Unit within the umbrella of Shakti Shalini.
- Provide counseling sessions to the children supported by CPU (herein after understood to include adolescents).
- Make assessments for the well-being of the children, supported by CPU.
- Facilitate the mental health aid, physical health aid, education aid, and play-based interventions of the children.
- Facilitate joint sessions between the primary caregiver and the child, aimed at building healthy parenting skills and parent-child bonding.
- Facilitate the rehabilitation of children as per their need and planning.
- Make home visits for children where applicable.
- Work in close coordination with the concerned adult counselor counseling the primary caregiver of the child.
- Facilitate group work with children and adolescents in communities.
- Liaison with concern partners (mental and physical health practitioners, schools, government institutions, etc.) as required for a child.
- Maintain case files and documentation of each child supported by CPU and their respective interventions.
- Maintain a care-driven, empathetic, compassionate, non-judgmental, and sensitive approach to all stakeholders including the children, partners, colleagues.
- Handle all material, stationery, and equipment with care and responsibility.
- Follow the accounts and administrative processes of the organisation.
- Report regularly and in detail to the Child Protection Lead.
- Work in close coordination with the concerned teams within the organisation.
- Work in careful synchronisation with the protocols, approaches, ethics and policies governing the organisation.
- Participate in all pan-organisation activities/ meetings/ trainings/events.
Necessary Skills:
- Child Counseling Skills
- Understanding of child development, family dynamics and community resources
- Understanding and awareness of Child and Adolescent related issues
- Understanding of Gender/Sexual based violence
- English speaking, writing, reading, comprehending skills
- Hindi speaking, writing, reading, comprehending skills.
- Basic computer skills
- Able to carry out quantitative and qualitative documentation.
- Committed to child protection and gender equality.
- Creative, sensitive, non-judgmental, hardworking, team-worker, and independent.
- Self-reflective and open to feedback..
Eligibility:
- Education: Must have a post-graduate degree in counselling, social work, gender studies, psychology or related subjects. Preferably with formal training in child counseling
- Work experience:
- Must have two years of experience as a child counselor taking up case work.
- Must have worked with marginalised communities/ in gender and child protection related issues.
